Digital Camera : Understanding Specifications

Digital Camera is new generation of cameras that made a revolution and swiped off the old bulky cameras and films from market.
Digital cameras are mainly of two types

  1. Pocket Digi Cameras
  2. DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex)
In digital cams normal digi cams and SLR doesn't make the difference like what it used to do earlier when the name came in place.

SLR uses a single lens from where the picture is recorded as well as seen before capturing.
While in earlier normal cameras there used to be a view finder for photographer, and a separated opening with lens for picture to be projected on film.

Now a days this thing is same in SLR as well as digi cam, the same opening gives a view of picture on your screen and you capture exactly what you see.

Now the difference is only a detachable lens in SLR and a little on technology inside. Ofcourse there are more functions.

So before buying learn about below points.

  1. F Number
  2. Shutter Speed
  3. ISO
  4. optical zoom
1. F-Number:- sometimes called focal ratio, or relative aperture of an optical system.
It is represented as f/D or some no below f. And higher the value of D, the lower the value of f/D, and so lower is the amount of light can enter. So if you don't understand much details then while choosing a camera always try choosing one with lens that has a lower f no.
for example :- f/2 is better then f/8

2. Shutter Speed:- is not mentioned in each and every camera but is usually there.
The shutter speed is usually important in high end photography, but you should know a little for the type of photography you are going to do with the camera.
Shutter speed means the exposure it allows to enter. So longer it takes more light enters to the camera.
Shutter should be slower for night photography, and for some nature pics taken so sufficient amoutn of light can enter.
But if should be fast enough if you want to capture a sports action, so the light for a single action will enter and will not blur picture with more movements. what the camera modes do for sports or night mode are usually adjusting ISO as well as shutter speed, if its changeable in the particular camera.

3. ISO:- is a standard for image sensitivity. To simply understand its ISO 100, ISO 200, ISO 400, ISO 800 and in some cameras ISO 1200 and ISO 1600 is being provided. More then that are in higher end cameras.
For dark area you have to use it with high ISO i.e 800 or more, which gives maximum sensitivity and a good picture. But if you will use a higher ISO in a bright day more than ISO 200, you picture will be distorted.
While buying a camera you can check up to what ISO does it provide, and upto what is it usable for you.

4. Optical Zoom:- is a zoom using the camera lens mechanics. Which is limited with lens size and optics. The company tries to compensate it with digital zoom. The digital zoom is not that usable, as once taken you can simply zoom the picture on your own desktop, which is called the digital zoom.
Optical zoom is helpful in someway clicking a better picture for a area far from reach, or for a wildlife photography etc.
Usually cameras come with 4X to 10X of digital zoom that is enough for a handy camera. While in SLRs you can always get a better lens for more and more zoom.

Hope you will get a little understanding about the terms of camera specification and it will help you choose right camera.
