Surfing speed and downloading speed are not different (Bps Vs bps)

I have heard many people talking about this that downloading speed is less than the surfing speed (usually 1/8th). There is nothing like that. Whatever is your surfing speed, the same will be your downloading speed too. For eg. if your ISP gives you a bandwidth of 2mbps, then your download speed will also be 2mbps and NOT 256kbps.
The root cause of confusion is the notation of speed. The specified bandwidth ( more generally called as surfing speed) is denoted by bps (bits per second) while all the downloaders denote the speed in terms of Bps (Bytes per second). Even the browsers denote the download speed in Bps. Since 1 Byte = 8 bits therefore if you are getting a download speed of 256KBps then it is same as 2048kbps or 2mbps.
If you are getting even less speed than this consistently then you should check for your connection strength or telephone/data cables.
To improve the downloading speed you can use third party downloaders like IDM. They will fetch the maximum out of your bandwidth.
